Judicial Minds Meet in Arusha: A Tale of Knowledge Sharing and Camaraderie.

The East African Magistrates and Judges Association (EAMJA) conference in Arusha, Tanzania, was abuzz with intellectual curiosity and warm camaraderie.

A delegation of esteemed Ugandan magistrates, and registrars, led by the indefatigable HW Prossy Katushabe, took a break from the conference proceedings to pay a visit to the African Court for Human and People’s Rights.

Although Justice Duncan Gaswaga, the mastermind behind the visit, was absent, his efforts ensured that the delegation received a warm welcome.

The protocol officers, Mr. Niyonkuru Emmanuel, Mr. Enno Robert, and Mrs. Musiime Winifred, treated the visitors with courtesy and care, taking them through the formation, jurisdiction, and workings of the court.

As part of the visit, the delegation was also taken to the new site that will house the African Court for Human and People’s Rights. The construction of the new premises is currently underway, and the delegation was impressed by the progress made so far.

The new site promises to provide a more spacious and modern facility for the court to carry out its important work. In her remarks, HW Prossy Katushabe thanked the team that received the Ugandan delegation and for the time they took to explain the workings of the court.

She also expressed special gratitude to Justice Duncan Gaswaga for making the visit possible. As a token of appreciation, HW Godfrey Kaweesa donated two copies of his latest publication, “DELAYED JUSTICE: Case Backlog in Uganda and a Right to Due Process.”

The delegation’s visit was a testament to the spirit of knowledge sharing and collaboration that defines the EAMJA community.

As we reflect on this enriching experience, we wish the African Court for Human and People’s Rights continued success in its deliberations.

May the challenges it faces, including the need for more member states to ratify the court’s protocol and raise awareness about its mandate, be overcome in the spirit of African solidarity and cooperation.
